M C Escher tessellations…

Recently I was sent a link to Instructables.com…

They made an end grain tessellated chopping board… cut with a 400 W laser…

My laser is only 80 W so I cut some thinner timber…long grain Rosewood actually…

IMG_3634IMG_3635
IMG_3636They are almost impossible to glue individually… so put them together dry… used masking tape on the back and smeared glue all over… scraped it across and into the joints…

More when it is finished… [at the moment it is in a vacuum bag being glued to a 10 mm ply substrate..

Timber coaster.

Well, not just one coaster… in fact a series of coaster sets…

Carol Neal  and I met at the Maleny Wood Festival in May. She owns and operates Nunkeri Estate where she grows plantation Silver Quandong timber [amongst other timbers]… the thinnings [branches] are crosscut into rounds.  Carol has commissioned me to laser engrave corporate logos onto the rounds… Until she can justify the purchase of her own laser, she is outsourcing here engraving work to me..

IMG_3558As you can see the various sizes lend themselves to different projects… larger for coasters, small for key rings..

Well, the first order is in… 360 coasters for the Australian Forrest Growers…IMG_3580

IMG_3581 All the coasters are size matched into sets of 4 or 6.IMG_3582

Set up a jig to be able to engrave multiple units.. in this case 12 at a time…

Finished 80 in the first batch yesterday and spent some time setting up samples of other logos.. IMG_3497The one above for the Macadamia Conservation Trust… who are going nuts over the concept of their logo on coasters and key rings…

More to come…
